Over the weekend, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water has earned over $55 Million domestic! Not bad for an opening weekend for a TV adaptation. This little yellow sponge and his friends have pushed out contentors – including: Jupiter Ascending, Seventh Son, and the previously hot American Sniper. And mind you, this movie isn’t just for kids! In fact, most of the moviegoers this weekend were in their 20s.
Spongebob has become a Nickelodeon favorite since 1999. This is also the second film based on the TV series. Sponge Out of Water focuses on when a diabolical pirate steals the secret Krabby Patty formula, SpongeBob and his friends must travel to the surface in order to get it back.
This movie is a fantastic 3D cartoon flick that will appease all fans of the show – but might not be for those who haven’t seen the cartoon. The film’s final act mixes the animated characters in a live action world, much like Who Framed Roger Rabbit and The Smurfs, as well as the first film in the franchise, and was directed by Mike Mitchell. In this act, SpongeBob and other characters are rendered in computer animation.
Rotten Tomatoes carries a 75% approval rating and IMDB is ranking it 7.1/10 stars.
