Greatest Superhero Movies

greatest superhero movies

We could all use a hero in our lives. Someone to pick us up when we are down, to save us from bad guys, to be our dream date… the list goes on and on. Although few of us can say we have a true superhero in our lives (if there’s one thing The Incredibles taught us, it is that superheroes live among us!), we get to feel as if we do thanks to the extravagant action movies starring some of the most iconic superheroes of the last century. Here, we take a look at the greatest superhero movies of the recent era and what makes them raise our heartrates while simultaneously melting our hearts.

Batman Begins

Batman Begins (2005), directed by Christopher Nolan, was the beginning of an incredible era of Batman movies. Starring Christian Bale as Batman, this film earns a spot on the greatest superhero movies list due to its groundbreaking special effects of the time, like during Batman’s epic fight scenes, cool and futuristic tech, like the super stylish Batmobile, and of course, the mysterious Batman, who was expertly enacted by the talented Bale. Although following Batman films, such as the famous The Dark Knight (2008), are often said to overshadow Batman Begins, true fans know that the original Batman is the best one, and that the whole story starts right at the beginning, in this superhero cinema classic.

Captain America

The first Captain America movie of the 2000’s, Captain America: The First Avenger (2011, directed by Joe Johnston earns its spot on the greatest superhero movies list thanks to some crazy cool CGI (Computer Generated Imagery) work and a perfectly cast protagonist. Captain America, played by Chris Evans, is flawlessly portrayed as a scrawny, scrappy wannabe Army guy who simply does not have the credentials nor the health to make it into the fighting ranks. Evans, who in real life is quite the buff guy, had his head affixed onto a smaller man’s body using CGI techniques. This gave Evans a scrawny look without needing an acting double! When he transforms to Captain America, he is acting as himself, without CGI.

Iron Man Trilogy

The Iron Man trilogy, directed by Jon Favreau and starring Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, brought a superhero to life in a new and exciting way. Starting in 2008 and with its latest movie in 2013, Iron Man set the standard for action-packed, romance-involved, life-saving moments packed into what have become some of the greatest superhero movies of the 2000’s. What’s more, using thrilling special effects, millions of viewers were able to gain an “inside” look, literally, at what it might be like to wear a magical, high-tech superhero suit like Iron Man’s.

A recent release, Deadpool (2016), directed by Tim Miller (this was his debut feature film!) and starring America’s hunk, Ryan Reynolds, is jokingly referred to as the anti-superhero movie due to its sarcastic and sometimes perverse humor. In fact, Deadpool himself breaks the fourth wall many times throughout the movie to let the audience know that they shouldn’t think of him as a superhero. With the most up-to-date CGI and amazing computer-altered action scenes for maximum explosiveness (literally), Deadpool is a must-see while it is still in theaters. You will be gasping from suspense one moment, then laughing the next. A fantastic blend of humor and action makes this one of the great superhero movies of the past year.

Film enthusiast, connoisseur of buttery popcorn. Life is one big movie, enjoy it.
