There are many great books that made great movies; there are bad books that made great movies; there are bad books that made bad movies. But there are also curious cases of great books that made bad movies.
As expected, Hollywood directors cannot just seem to leave great books alone. They are always striving to turn those great books into movies, but the move doesn’t always go as planned. As a result, there are great books that have made bad movies. Here is a list.
Bonfire Of The Vanities
The Bonfire Of The Vanities is a novel written by Tom Wolfe. It is considered to be one of the most successful novels in the literary world and many thought that it would certainly make a great movie. The movie even casts big names such as Bruce Willis and Tom Hanks. However, the movie turned out to be a failure. This is a testament to the fact that big names don’t always guarantee success.
The Great Gatsby
According to the Rotten Tomatoes, only 68% of the audience approve of this movie. While the number is greater than the average, it is not an endorsement of the greatness of the movie given the fact that the movie is derived from a great book. Honestly speaking 68% is far from being a generous approval.
The novel was written by Christopher Paolina and presents a hero’s journey. Actually, this looks more like the Lord of the Rings and spins the casts the story of a poor boy who is suddenly granted a dragon to train with so as to become strong. However, the movie never really caught fire like its book counterpart, casting it as of the great failures in the theaters.
