The Hunger Games series has been a movie franchise that has garnered a huge amount of attention for both of the movies released so far – but will Mockingjay: Part 1 live up to the hype?
The third movie of the franchise is opening on the same weekend as Hunger Games: Catching Fire did in 2013 in 4,151 theatres – suggesting that Lionsgate expect it to be a lucrative opening weekend. Film Forecaster partnered with Paragon Poll to predict just how well it will do opening weekend.
In order to assess the overall interest; Wikipedia page views were analyzed for the 2 months leading up to the release date of for The Hunger Games and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, as well as tracking page views for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 in the lead up to the release date.
Based on the Wikipedia page view trends, the interest levels are not as high for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 as for the previous two films.
Keyword searches for Hunger Games, hunger games 2/3 and hunger games catching fire/hunger games mockingjay were also analyzed for the 12 months leading up to the release dates.
While the volume of searches was higher for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 than The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, the search trends are similar. With a drop off in searches a six months before release, and upward trend in searches three months prior to the movie release date.
Based on this data and other information collected by Film Forecaster and Paragon Poll, we believe The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 will not join it’s predecessors by taking in over $150 million on it’s opening weekend.
