Fifty Shades of Grey Full-Length Trailer Released

With the tagline, “Mr. Grey Will See You Now,” the Today Show introduced the Fifty Shades of Grey trailer this morning, with the racy full-length version available online.

Dakota Johnson stars as literature student Anastasia Steele who falls in lust with billionaire entrepreneur Christian Grey, played by Jamie Dornan. However, Dornan’s face is not seen until 50 seconds into the trailer- how appropriate. Although Grey warns, “I don’t do romance,” the film’s release date is set for Valentine’s Day weekend. With adult women as the target demographic, the holiday premier date will bring friends and couples. To match the female-target is the female-involvement, with author E.L James, screenwriter Kelly Marcel and director Sam Taylor-Johnson. Like many book to movie adaptations, the film will be under scrutiny by fans- and there’s lots of them. The New York Time’s best seller has been translated into 52 languages. However, if Universal’s trailer is any indication, the movie should bring some heat.

In terms of promotion, the @FiftyShades Twitter account held a countdown to the trailer. However, Beyoncé shared a teaser on Instagram five days ago to her 14 million followers. The singer has an exclusive version of the 2003 hit Crazy In Love for the film, which will remind viewers of the sexual themes from her latest self-titled album as she continues her On the Run tour with husband Jay Z. Beyoncé’s involvement in the film should not come as a shock. The artist has shared her frustration that women are not encouraged to be sexual beings like men are throughout her album, but especially the smash hit Flawless.

As Forbes mentioned, the book sparked significant debate. Scott Mendelson noted, “As is always the case when females become interested in any kind of popular art, the pundits and analysts were out in full force over the last couple years trying to “explain” why women had the gall to enjoy something that isn’t explicitly targeted at the male audience.” It will be interesting to see how the movie will resurface and alter these conversations.
